Learn C++. You won't be a particularly good programmer with it, but learning the mountains of trivia involved with the simplest things will give you a great sense of accomplishment.

I did once read through a bit of c++ for dummies. Also I once got sent on a dole course about programming that covered a bit of it, but I was thrown out after a couple of weeks for running a linux liveCD (I always used it to do the exercises, had to look up some syntax differences) and telnetted to the mail server's port 25 in the building and sent a spoofed email to the teacher in my class from someguy@somewhere.com saying "This is a spoofed email!".
I didn't think they'd get so pissed off, the network guy came in and was like "WE HAVE THE IP!" and came over to my machine and it was "HE'S USING LINUX! HAXOR!".
I really didn't think they'd have given a fuck, if I really thought they would I would've used an RPC exploit (they were all XP) to do it from another machine. Oh well, youthful indescretion.

However, I've forgotten all that shit now.
I do sometimes use bash scripts for things, but I never got the hang of loops in them so use perl and system(" for loops. That's how shit I am.

I did use visual basic a few years ago and that wasn't as bad as I thought. It's the only thing I ever made a GUI in.
