Flash is a bytecode format.
Bytecode for a VM for running ECMAScript.

if someone cared enough they could make an SWF compiler for (e.g.) Scheme.
Yes, please. Actionscript 3 is Javascript with Java and ENTERPRISE dumped all over it.
