Vim is very much a console editor, the fact that there are graphical version of it like gvim dont really change anything, you are forced to learn all the hotkeys to get anything done. Emacs on the other hand works like any other IDE in graphical mode by using your mouse to get things done, choosing stuff in menus, highlighting text with the mouse. And that is great for a beginner because you can put off having to learn all the hotkey shortcuts right away and get to know the editor, then learn hotkeys once you feel comfortable.
