I like programming and computer science, but I really have a problem with how it is taught at school. Is it a good idea to switch to a major in math and just teach myself programming? Has anybody here done this?

What type of school are you talking about? College teaches programming very different from university, which teaches computer science...

Maybe you should learn about real-life skills such as plumbing or driving trucks, because they teach it really well!

Computer science is not about programming. Computer science is not about programming. Computer science is not about programming. These are two distinct subjects.
