Anonymous Filesharing

Name: Anonymous 2009-09-20 9:58

I guess I'll just start with what I actually have to say. If you care, read on, if you don't - well, do whatever you feel like. My point of discussion is:

Anonymous Filesharing
=====================

Currently there are several ways to anonymously share files and among other things surf the web (e.g. TOR, I2P, Freenet). Examples are "ANts P2P, RShare, Freenet, I2P, GNUnet and Entropy." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_sharing)

Unfortunately nearly all of them, if not all, have major drawbacks, including but not limited to:

    * Slow transfer speeds
    * High transfer overhead
    * Crappy/slow implementation
    * Non cross-platform compatibility

Many will probably argue now that "Crappy/slow implementation" can't be achieved when "cross-platform compatibility" is desired - I though think that's not true. Two major programming languages for "true" crosspatform compatibility are Python and Java. Seeing as Java and Python aren't all that slow (http://shootout.alioth.debian.org/u32q/) and hardware is currently getting better and better this isn't a problem at all. Also seeing as Python will soon be getting a speed boost up to 5x times the current speed and more (http://code.google.com/p/unladen-swallow/) supports my reasoning.

Anonymous platforms I've taken a look at until now include:

I2P
---

    * Good
        * Relative friendly interface
        * Steadily growing community
            * Constantly new software being developed
        * Cross-platform
    * Bad
        * (Really) Slow transfer speeds
        * RAM killer
        * Many things implemented but none of them right
        * Development of good (and potentially very successful) stopped
          (http://syndie.i2p2.de/)

Freenet
-------

    * Good
        * Relative friendly interface
        * Cross-platform
        * Rather fast transfer speeds compared to I2P and similiar services
          (~ 200MB/60+ Minutes)
        * Good software available, including Frost.
    * Bad
        * Development slowed down
        * Darknet was introduced which kinda destroyed the concept

Tor
---

    * Good
        * Probably very anonymous
        * Reasonably fast to surf with
    * Bad
        * Bad for P2P
        * P2P Transfer slow down the complete network

Those are just my own, non-technical experiences with these services; I'm not guaranteeing everything I'm saying is correct but you'll yourself see that most of my points have atleast some truth to it. my point being, we need a good, anonymous, relatively fast file-sharing and website-publishing method, and NO Usenet isn't one of those - it isn't anonymous.
