Bits and Bytes

Computer Science is supposed to logical, Amirite?

Then why was the Byte defined as 8 bits?

Wouldn't things have been far more simple if they defined it as 10 bits in a byte?

In what sense is arbitrary jamming a random decimal number into a representation of a binary number system ``more simple''?
