Hal.dll is DEEEEADj

When i start lappy he tells me hal.dll is missing/corrupt.
I don't have the windows OS CD forg this particular system, and I believe each hal.dll is unique to each system so taking any other one and replacing the file won't work regardless of what the internet says. I have already tried it with the Windows OS disk from some others systems.
Now I don't want to overload you with details, because I am afraid then you won't want to read through it all, but I am going to give you the following information:
I have, however, been able to get windows working by doing the following commands, in that order:
Placing the windows boot disk of agnother system in the drive.
Booting froms thats disk.
expanding d:\386\hal.dl_
then, bootcfg
then, /rebuild
then, yes
then, Windows XP Media Center Edition
then, /Fastdetect

and I don't totally understand why that worked to get it to boot up as usual, but it did.
however, now I have to do it EVERY TIME i start my system, and, unfortunately, it's kinda annoying for me.
Right now I have gotten by by never shutting down my laptop and always leaving it on on standby mode, except a couple of times in the past when I had to restart for automatic updates (on that note, any way tod make auto updates install safely w/o having to restart your compy?). So Ig'm open to any suggestions.
PLZ HELAP fix hal.dll, or whatever the problem may be?

I can see you were going for something different here, but hopefully in hindsight you can understand why nobody will rage at this. It's sage material, not rage material.
