Learning Korean

I am considering picking up some Korean and I was wondering if there is any difference in Korean spoken in North Korea and Korean spoken in the south? I once read Kim Il-Sung discouraged the use of hanja and North Korea dropped them altogether but from what I know they were later introduced? Is that true?
