That depends entirely on what you're trying to do, now doesn't it? (The 'what are good alternatives' part, not 'PHP is not the best thing out there.')

The only ''alternatives´´ to PHP are ASP and ColdFusion, which are just as worthless. If you had any sense, you would throw out the whole class of ''shitty templating engines that got mistaken for programming languages´´ and switch to actual programming languages.
