$10 says you're looking at a sea of ints, mostly alike.  It's probably either an index or an autoincrementing field or something.  The regions strings is finding just happen to have values that map to printable ascii characters so strings prints them out.

Data recovery from fucked up databases is part of my day job, so I can give you a few pointers ->
1) if you know what kind of DB it is, it's several hundred times easier.
2) If you know that it's fixed-length records, it's several thousand times easier.
3) If you know what's SUPPOSED to be in the database, getting the data back out is about a billion times easier.

Maybe the database stores strings in UTF-16, meaning there'd be a shitload of NUL bytes between the characters.
