This is in fact a handy device of the English language that allows you, the reader to infer the scope of quantifiers and in this case an operation, without my needing to explicitly state it. If your local English dialect doesn't have indefinite articles, you could have a valid point but only when assuming the completely illogical premise that I was speaking in your said local dialect to begin with.
