Linux, but with all the GNU shit replaced with stuff ported from FreeBSD. Because FreeBSD is better but frankly its compatibility is shitty, so this is the true SATORI way.

If you expected someone to say windows, we're sorry to disappoint you. No-one on /prog/ uses a toy OS

I use the GNU/X11/Apache/Linux/TeX/Perl/Python/FreeCiv operating system
GNU/Linux, obviously. It's years better than the lame Microslut Windows, and it's free as in freedom. Nevertheless, as long as my programming power grows, I'm realizing that the system is not perfect as well.
I don't think that there's a real good operating system. The point is: avoid Windows. It's just good enough to write documents and get viruses... you won't grow with that shit.

Windows XP. Probably the best desktop operating system Microsoft has released so far.
Windows XP. It's fast, stable, great software, compatible with everything, highly customizable, great UI(lots of keyboard shortcuts), does everything you need. The only bad thing is it can get fucked up easy, but it's really really worth it. Oh yeah, also games.

if you look at all the PHD CS professors at your local state college, they're all using macbooks, except for that one guy with the dell who loves teaching java, you know you who are
