Development Income

I'm trying to find some statistics comparing income for individuals developing software under an open source license compared to a closed source license. The idea of comparison itself is easy enough, just by comparing compensation allowed through developing under, say, the GPL versus a private license, but it would be nice to have some solid numbers. Anything at all would be helpful.

Enlighten me then. I think I have a fairly good understand of how/why open source doesn't work, but the converse I may need some help on.
