With all due respect to McCarthy, Sussman and Graham, they didn't
invent Lisp, but discovered it. It is not an understatement of their achievement, it's the fact of life: some things like natural numbers, Lie groups and parentheses are eternal and immutable, and are merely brought to light by the human genius, not "created" or "invented".
