SICP is Obsolete today

Even Sussman himself agrees.

I talked to Professor Sussman on the phone ... He said that he'd actually been trying to have 6.001 replaced for the last ten years (and I read somewhere that Professor Abelson was behind the move too). Understanding the principles is not essential for an introduction to the subject matter anymore. He sees 6.001 as obsolete.

Why should I believe you, or follow a link from someone in their first 10 posts? Why is that book worth reading? What does SICP stand for?

Hmm, at least the link seems to be honest (pointing where it appears to point).

Thanks.

I checked it this morning and it looked good.

SICP = Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs. This is the text that MIT uses in their intro programming class, in Scheme. By all accounts a great book for teaching the intro to CS.

I haven't read it, but I have watched the lectures <http://www.swiss.csail.mit.edu/classes/6.001/abelson-sussman-lectures/>; that are online.
