Which language should I learn?

Name: Anonymous 2009-02-17 2:34

Sup /prog/, I want to learn a language. I'm thinking something fairly simple to start off with like PHP but I hear alot of people saying it's shit. I'll be learning on my own from a reference book plus ebooks I can find.

So what would be a good language for a beginner to master before progressing to something more complex.

Thanks!

C language family: GDB, DBX, DMalloc, ElectricFence, Valgrind, Memprof, DDD, Emacs' GDB mode, KGDB, KDevelop, Eclipse, XCode

Javascript: alert(), Firebug which is really just a repl and a DOM browser, fairly useless for anything major, and only works on Shitfox anyway -- plus the extra pleasure of having to deal with cross-browser and cross-platform inconsistencies, and having to run multiple goddamn computers to make sure something really works right.

Ergo fuck you, faggot

Do lumberjacks make excellent carpenters?

Following this learn C bullshit, one would think they would.

Lumberjacks know how the fuck trees work. They know how they grow and how to cut them down and how to make boards.

Carpenters know wood, how to cut it, where to use and what to use to fasten it together. To do this, he only needs to know about wood. He doesn't need to know how to down a fucking tree and then how to plant a new one to replace it so he can cut it down later.

Learn C if you think the 2 best tools for building a house are an ax and a chainsaw.

learn how to spell "a lot" before you even think about learning to program.

No, in case you're too goddamn dumb to realize this (which I strongly suspect you are, because you're FrozenReject, you don't need all of those. In simple cases a breakpoint in gdb is fully sufficient. The existence of such a large array of utilities simply means that C actually has tools, because it's well-supported and not a fucking failure of a language. If I had to put up with that alert() bullshit to fix everything I would commit fucking suicide.

And how do you propose getting the wood? Also, the two best tools for building a house are a mixer and a trowel.

Why does this thread have 50 replies?
It should have been a simple link to /pr/[1] and ignored for several months until some faggot bumped it.

That's because C programmers aren't the tidal flood of shit that consists of modern "programmers" whos work consists of looking up class documentation.
