Perlfailrue

Last time I did something that you could call programming something was in vocational school a few years back with simple sepples.
Now I'm visiting a Perl course from work (thought it coult help since I work with some Linux systems) but I really don't get shit. On the second day today we spent the whole time on regexes, subroutines and reference shit. I already struggled in confusion with basic syntax, loops, hashs and that crap yesterday, but today it really was unpleasant rape.
Is perl just that hard of a language to learn or am I too retarded to understand basic programming logic?

I obviously haven't read my share of _SICP, sorry about that. But it's already too late for that now, and even if I tried, it's just too high for me.
