swap files

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-24 3:27

I hate swap files. However i can't force WindowsXP to force not to use one.The sneaky bitch creates one whenever she wants.

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-24 3:45

put it on ramdisk.

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-24 3:50

wat?
why would you hate swapping?

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-24 3:52

Without swapping:
program don't halt for 10 seconds for files to finish written to swap and back. With annoying hard drive noise.
With swapping:
the above happens.

Uh... swap files are pretty much necessary for 32-bit processors.

You mean when you have 32 MB of RAM?

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-24 3:54

Use Linux if you don't like completely retarded swap behavior.

Even with 2GB of ram which is 90% free?

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-24 3:56

Install Linux,Problem Solved.
Linux has ports of all the software you need.

The sickening thing about swap is that your kernel would rather keep a copy of that 1GB file you just finished parsing/downloading/backing up than the program memory you're using all day.  Fine, everything is a file, but everything is NOT FUCKING MEMORY.  Oh, and the part where swapping out a program involves shredding it into confetti and sprinkling it to random corners of the swap file so it takes 3000 seek operations to recover.  And recovery is only attempted on a page-by-page basis.  While actual files are pretty much contiguous and have read-ahead optimization but VM still considers them the same priority ugh rawarrrrr.

I can't wait for cheap SSD.This madness will end.

swapping to ramdisk will improve performance.
Its are a FACT.

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-24 4:25

" It's an intriguing idea because some RAM operations are literally about a million times faster (that's six orders of magnitude) than a hard drive's. Therefore, any operations you can keep in RAM will typically complete much, much faster than those that involve reads/writes using a mechanical hard drive."

Its amazing how little free ramdisk software there is for XP.

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-24 5:50

What, so the swap file can thrash the disk and eventually destroy it with excessive superfluous write cycles?

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-24 5:54

ENTERPRISE QUALITY SSDS CAN HANDLE OVER 1 MILLION WRITE CYCLES.ORDER NOW.

Do you swap more than 100GB per day? Because if not, Intel's got you covered for 5 years, right now. They're just not cheap yet.

Someone haven't seen HD quality torrents of TV series.

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-24 6:46

Someone had better not be trying to load those into memory in their entirety.

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-24 6:47

Windows would :
1.Cache them all.
2.use Swap file to hold the cache

I don't think you know what ``swap'' is

Even as i'm writing windows writes back and forth from swapfile.
I'm not doing anything.

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-24 8:50

That's what you get with using toy systems. Be a man and write your own kernel drivers.

I installed the ramdrive but windows still insist on keeping 1.5GB swapfile on C:((its disabled),the swap is on ramdrive)
