Except that in practice, it doesn't work like that. Case in point, this file:

PDF: 3.4 MB (3579255 bytes)
First compression (RAR):  1.2 MB (1308773 bytes)
Second compression (ZIP): 1.2 MB (1310467 bytes)
Third compression (RAR):  1.3 MB (1314617 bytes)

So the file is actually considerably bigger than it would have been if it had only been compressed once.
