Printing to pdf character screw-ups

I have observed a most curious error: When I print ebooks from .doc./.txt to .pdf, some letters get substituted by other. The catch is, they are changed to letters that are visually similar: h to b, a to d. Why is that so?

Did you check if the .doc/.txt files also contain those errors? It could be OCR errors.
