Things that annoy me about UIs

Name: Anonymous 2008-05-04 14:34

1) Focus stealing

Focus stealing on any user interface pisses me off majorly:

  1) It can cause clicking wrong buttons or triggers
  2) Hitting enter or space at the wrong place and triggering horrible results
  3) It means I have to work slower because I have to wait for the focus to be stolen so that I may correct it and continue my work

2) Lack of feedback

Halting a whole program's UI because it's doing some task pisses me off. Additionally, I should be notified of everything that the program is doing unobstructively.

  1) How long will it be like this for?
  2) Has it crashed?[1]
  3) Does this indicate a problem with *my* system or that the designers didn't bother to put feedback on this task?

[1] If a task is happening for which progress or duration predications cannot be made (e.g. question 1), it is still utterly important that I recieve feedback about this. If the program has a timeout point, it should mention that.

lrn2/configure wm. Unless you are in windows.

Yeah, because console apps like cp, mv, or rm provide lots of feedback by default. You may enable -v, but wow, it floods the terminal. Now that's ``obstructive''. Ok, yes, this is easier to fix with GUI... using threads. You should know what that means.
