Kernel size

Assuming I can get a boot loader to bring it into memory (which may be a
major limitation), how large of a kernel can be built, loaded, and started?
I'd like to know how far I could potentially go in building a HUGE initramfs
image.

I have several ideas for things to do.  One of them involves having another
kernel image in the initramfs image and loading it via kexec.

...why would you want a huge kernel?
