What should I use to code?

I've been using the free Borland C compiler and Notepad all semester. I've noticed it would be nice to know what line I'm on... what text editor and compiler do you guys recommend?

I can't believe it hasn't been said. Check if your School is part of the MSDN (Microsoft Developers Network) Alliance, and check if you can get a free copy of Visual Studio 2005. The text editor in that is pretty sweet, much better then ``Notepad'' or ``Emacs.''
