I remember one day at University I went around the student union trying all the doors to see what the rooms were. Conference Room 2 was particularly good as it contained an upright piano that I spent a few minutes enjoying. Muslim Prayer Room wasn't so good as they all stared at me with distaste; I felt very uncomfortable.
But the worst was Recreation Room 4. I turned the handle, opened the door and was met with an awful stench of sweaty, unwashed male. About twenty nerds playing some tabletop role playing game sat there. They turned towards me and in the middle was Fat Nick, their ringleader (or dungeonmaster or whatever they call it) smiling his horrible creepy smile. I shuddered and left the room quickly before he could throw a sarcastic comment my way.
Fat Nick was the worst of all the geeks I encountered at Uni. He was on my Computer Science course and lived in the same Halls of Residence too. Every conversation with him would mostly consist of a torrent of sarcastic put-downs from his mouth. He spent his evenings sitting in the Hall Bar sipping a can of Tango, writing fantasy stories on his Psion palmtop computer and talking to Angela, one of the barmaids.
She despised him. At first, she pitied him due to his lack of friends in the Hall and would talk to him because of that. But he became increasingly obsessive towards her. He would stand nearby her window and stare in late at night, even when the curtains were closed and he could only see her shadow. He'd sit near her at dinner, much to the initial amusement of her friends, and later to their annoyance.
Worst of all though, he smelled really bad. He wore the same tatty jumper all the time and must have never washed it as it always stank of stale sweat, as did he. He had a room with an en suite shower - I guess it remained unused. Until we moved to a new building with better air conditioning, I could tell where he'd been in the computer science building from the lingering odour. (Though to be fair, that could have been any one of a few stinking geeks in the department.)
Whenever I meet anyone like Fat Nick these days I make my best efforts to avoid them. It's just not worth trying to be social or friendly with such people.
