Hey prog how many of you like to program games?

Name: Tomq 2007-02-17 16:55

I do, and I'll get around to it eventually.  Anyone know of a great engine for computer games thats free?

http://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/mod/journal/journal.asp?jn=323649

that guy made his own...

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-17 17:12

so make your own, fuck!

Quake engines?

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-17 18:24

>>4
Yep, I'm an expert programmer.

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-17 18:42

I'm making a clone of a particular NES game right now. And gamedev kicks ass, I hang out on their IRC channel all the time.

So do I.  Maybe we have talked before.

Anyway anyone have half life 2 source?

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-17 21:51

I just make little silly 2D games, want to spend some time and make somthing 3D eventually..

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-17 22:54

>>8
eh theres nothing silly about 2D games for someone that makes them themselves.  The dude from gamedev I linked to is a real Pro.  He got in fights with Take Two on publishing his games before.

Half life 2 sourcecode is out there?

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-17 23:39

>>9
Eh.. I'm not sure what to make of that guy.  He's definitely got the skills to be be working in the game industry, but judging from some of the screenshots he doesn't have enough experience to go straight into graphics engine development.  It is very impressive what he has done on his own, but the game looks like it has derivative gameplay and could use more professionally done art.

?
looks better than alot of stuff out there now.  and I cant draw at all, but this guy can.

whats this about half life 2 sourcecode?

The last game I programmed was an othello game for MS-DOS with mouse and sound-blaster support.

The one before that was a Summer Games knock-off for Commodore 64s called "Special Olympics" (Wheelchair Diving...25 yard hobble...etc)

I guess I never really got into it.

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-18 0:47

Looks better than what???  I saw a few decent shader effects, but  the engine itself doesn't look very complex.

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-18 1:40

>>14
I am going to say right away no new (good) computer games, as it is a computer game.  but:
Zelda: TP
FFXII

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-18 2:48

>>15
Wow... you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.  For starters, Zelda: TP has much better shaders including HDR effects, and the engine itself handles scenes with way more geometry.  You must be retarded if you are being amazed by some shadows and bump mapping on the side of a building.

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-18 2:53

>>16
Nah, I hate Zelda and the way it looks.

Goddamn its like the same as OoT.

Damn people just can't move on...

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-18 6:51

>>16
The wii doesn't have shaders. Way to go undermining any point you had.

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-18 7:56

I just meant silly/for fun like a hobby, I dont do it professionally

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Wii and GameCube have the TEV unit, which is a little different from normal shaders in the pipeline.  I didn't distinguish between the two because they provide the same basic functions, and I figured most people wouldn't have much knowledge on the subject.  Which you proved.

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-18 14:57

>>18
And way to be ignorant, anon.

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-18 16:03

>>21
TEV unit == shit.
Alot of games dont even bother using it.  It is too unreliable and shitty to use on games.

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-18 16:13

>>23
I call shenanigans, provide examples where it is "unreliable and shitty".  Any games by major developers for the GameCube or Wii that I've seen use a least a few shader effects, so its more like the developers that can't use the TEV are the "unreliable and shitty" ones.  By the way, what does this have to do with >>15 being an idiot that knows nothing about graphics engines?

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-18 16:15

if (!eval(>>21.getLine(1))) {

You don't have much knowledge on the subject.

fail, you ment >>23

Name: Anonymous 2007-02-18 23:09

hehe, I have no idea on gamecube or wii components, just wanted to piss off the people that think it can actually do anything

have fun failing out of your classes at your lower tier college, btw.  winter terms are earlier and much more compact at good universities.

I think >>7 was referring to Source as in Half Life 2's game engine, not the source code
