A good amount of people only make it freeware in hopes to be bought by a company or get popular enough to slowly add certain new features only available to users that donate or buy the full program.

The biggest reason that I don't give away my sources is that I don't want to risk any spyware-infested clones (has happened loads with miranda, among others)
