4chan needs better software!

Name: Anonymous 2006-12-01 1:04

If you use the wonders of distributed computing you could simply buy 10 or more shared hosting packages from various providers such as 1&1, go daddy, dreamhost, etc. and easily cover all the bandwidth costs.

They just need distributed software. Seriously all the bandwidth issues are from static images and flash files. The board software doesn't even need to be distributed just the images.

(note: that is probably wrong in some way, also of course it doesn't mean you shouldn't write it, just don't write it in PHP)

Rewrite 4chan using Java Enterprise Edition and use Web Services and XML all over the place.  The Synergies between the Best Practice technologies would lead to a new Revolution in Enterprise Grade Software!

Opinion seems to be divided :(
Yes, divided between: moot and you, and every-fucking-one else, who said the old one was better. Honestly, I don't remember anyone saying this one looks better than the one with the sage checkbox we used to have.

And I remember seeing pretty good reasons why the older theme was better, like having the post numbers properly aligned, different posts being easier to differentiate (better visual division), or the reply button below the textarea. Seriously, whose idea was to put it ABOVE it? It's customary from almost any message board of any sort to write it, then be able to switch to the next form element with Tab, which is the Submit (or Reply) button. Now you have to move backwards the focus. It's counter-intuitive, and it's ugly.

Hey, I like this theme.

I agree about tabbing to the submit button though. Positioning it with CSS instead could fix that, I think.

OK, I'll change the taborder. The next theme I'm going to write will have even/odd post coloring for sure, and maybe I'll work some into here;

i like this theme better because it looks more like kareha and 2ch

Mr Vac Bob, you are a true goon, You are on the road to becoming a radium! You can't even bother doing any real math.
What the maximum monthly throughput a 100mbps connection can get you?

~ 26 TB

What do many web hosters promise? 2TB for $10. Hmmm
26/2 = 13.

13 * 10 = 130... AND 130 is less than 1200! WOW

IMAGINE 4CHAN ACTUALLY MAKING MONEY. Not while GOONS are at the helm. That's for sure.

Also I'm talking about reputable web hosts like godaddy and 1and1, not shit tanks like dreamhost. But since you're a goon you assume the world is just like dreamhost.

Good job, RADIUM.

See >>41.

I am honestly completely unable to believe any shared solution would take us, even a supposedly reputable one. Porn sites don't get love, and 4chan is worse than a porn site and Stormfront combined. GoDaddy sold our old domain name to a squatter once, you know.

I wouldn't want to expose them anyway. They'd get virtual AIDS.

Also this is a nonprofit website

I would suggest this connection, as it is very reasonably priced and rather fast.

And instead of trying to keep ONE server running, the admins can try and keep THIRTEEN servers, in various locations, running!

Totally foolproof plan!

Have you ever seen someone use a 1&1 or Dreamhost-esque cheap server and get the full 2TB/month out of it? I mean, really. I'm sure it's a great idea for distributed hosting if you don't mind the downloads being slow as hell or half the boards going offline every other week for CPU usage thresholds.

Name: Anonymous 2006-12-03 11:52

yeah they'd need to monitor if the servers are still up and change the mirror list per availability. Yet for none of those servers are thy directly responsible. And if you look at the skills of VacBob you can plainly see that the problem is not N servers it is the technical competency of the administration (he uses a mac).

>>53
That's the beauty of not serving dynamic content from the mirrors. Static content is very very cheap to host and costs shit all for CPU. So your argument is null and void. As for bandwidth Godaddy reps etc constantly say they don't mind people using their bandwidth within the limits of the purchased plans. If you aren't heavily burdening the CPUs with slow slow PHP bullshit (which wouldn't happen on the mirrors) no one will whine to you about CPU usage.

<@MrVacBob> 4chan should only be using half the hardware it's on now, but we don't have time to fix it up
