After a decade of development and a lot of people telling them their UI sucks (and why), you'd think they'd have figured that out.

But no. The developers have this little ego thing going on.

GIMP needs an MDI interface. It looks better and doesn't mess with other applications, but the main point is to dock all toolbars and its stupid free windows somewhere, so they won't be hiding/getting hidden by your images ALL THE FUCKING TIME, especially when you zoom in/out which you usually need to do a lot.

I, for one, like GIMP's UI.
You've said it, "for one". May I ask if you did any real work with it? Real is at least 5 layers and at least 5 MPix, or a complex skin or web interface consisting of 20 or more image files, preferrably vectorized OH WAI-.

GIMP is fine in a windowing system that automatically aligns windows and "snaps" them together, like KDE.

GIMP is annoying and made of fail in its Windows port (and it crashes if I dont fuck with Affinity for the same reason System Shock 2 does... god forbid some of us might have pentiums with HT). It needs more Photoshop-esque types of windows and toolboxes.

GIMP is fine in a windowing system that automatically aligns windows and "snaps" them together, like KDE.
And also has a virtual desktop to itself, with Xmouse behaviour.

Even so, I still find it clumsy, especially when working on images that are larger than my screen (which is the normal case for me).

Snapping is nice (and you can have it with nVidia drivers in Windows too), but it's NOT a replacement for a proper interface. No matter if windows snap, they'll get hidden or hide image windows, and even if you bother to move your images, they'll be all messed up again when you zoom in/out, something I do about once every minute in average.
