But solaris + the GNU userspace bits are pretty passable. Of course it's still made of proprietary and sparc, which is past the mark of suck.

Sloaris on the other hand does have a control panel written in Java. I started it once; took literally half an hour to load.

Python is made of win and Guido Van Rossum. Win is alright, and I've got mixed feelings about Guido but the whole mix is quite good so far, so I'll take a double ration of Python and none of Java.

I would recommend Python, the syntax is nice to work with.
Though, if you become enraged at the thought of using indentation instead of braces, I would recommend Java.
