Video Game Programming Colleges

Name: mizukami !qZIhB0izmw 2005-05-01 1:18

Any suggestions on video game colleges/boot-camps for computer science bachelor graduates?

Don't. Not unless you really know what you're getting into.

If you want something more informative, you'll have to tell us where you're willing to go. I could recommend RMIT, but you're probably not in Australia.

You might be better off writing some small games of your own first.

If you have a CS degree just grab a game programming books (i suggest "Game Coding Complete: 2nd Edition") and writing some demos. Thos game colleges appeal to high school drop outs that play games alot and are looking for an easy way to get a job(which it isnt)

Most game studios laugh at these places, not with them. Get a CS degree instead.

I agree with the opinions that you should never enter such a school. I disagree with the advice to take a book and here is why: you've got a bachelor's degree and so you know how to program but you never wrote anything big or useful (at least that's what happened to me). A friend of mine told me to write a program! Stupid piece of advice? no, you just have to focus on a project and do it, this is how you'll learn. The books will come later, when you really need them.

I wrote a small game in OpenGL and as I was doing it and adding more features, I really learned because I was practicing my skills in a real life project  and when I was stuck I looked at a few pages in a book. But I never bought a book because I just needed a few pages to read in each one.

The most important advice is: DO IT! Don't waste your time with books because if you limit yourself to the reading part, you'll never practice what you read and you can't learn anything at all without writing/compiling/running your own code.

If you go to Digipen, that's very likely to be the end of your game dev story. Get a useful degree instead.

Digipen has an extremely high tuition for a narrow made up degree that would be better gained in a real college.  And Digipen is not a real college, no matter how hard it tries to be.  And there's like one chick in the whole school, which does nothing unless you're into bukkake.  The population is also 400% nerd.

Yea you should try PHP to program game, I USED it it was fantastisc. Cood woork on coding PHP. PHP is a multiparadigm with no type system! It has a cood optional mechnisme called: type hinting, so you don't need the type system, but still you can.
