The problem with the school system.

Name: Anonymous 2013-05-02 7:03

Ordinarily, say if someone were putting together a piece of furniture, their logic would be much more astute, if something looks too loose they would say "oops, that's not right", accepting their mistake without a second thought. So why are people so irrational otherwise?

The school system teaches people that reality is the ultimate test and to look for errors in yourself when you make a mistake, it then teaches people to view authority figures in the same way, to them their teachers, and future employers, are as infallible as reality itself. Thus they grow dependent on external validation processes, either reality or authority, and when they need to rely on their own validation processes their logic is far more flawed.

I've noticed that too: In English class, wordiness is rewarded. Being brief in your statements is punished. It's the complete opposite of what the ancient Spartans taught their children.
Then again, that was a society that practiced slavery.

Abused but culprits go scot-free

SUFFERED: Mr Edward Bowen, an alumni of the elite Horace Mann School, is one of a group asking the school's board of trustees to investigate the charges.

STUDENTS at one of America's most prestigious schools were abused by paedophile teachers for more than three decades.

But US prosecutors said they were unable to file charges because the crimes happened long ago, officials in New York said last Friday.

The Bronx District Attorney's Office said in a statement that police had uncovered evidence of "systemic" abuse of pupils at the famous Horace Mann School, spanning a 34-year period from 1962 to 1996.

However, no charges would be filed because of the state's statute of limitations laws.

Founded in 1887, Horace Mann is seen as offering the best education money can buy with an annual tuition fee of almost US$40,000.

It was the subject of an expose in the New York Times Magazine last June, in which a former student alleged there had been numerous cases of sexual contact between students and teachers during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

After the article, a number of alleged victims came forward saying they had also suffered sexual abuse at the school. "In total, we received direct information regarding at least 12 separate alleged abusers," the statement from the Bronx District Attorney's office read.

"The reported abuses ranged from what may be characterized as inappropriate behaviour to child endangerment, actual instances of sexual contact, sexual intercourse and criminal sexual acts."

But because so much time had passed, prosecutors said they were unable to file charges.

In most of the cases, the statute of limitation for paedophilia-related charges was five years or less, they said. - AFP.

That's disturbing. Meanwhile three women who were abducted for 10 years are pressing charges on their captors and these kidnappers are definitely getting jail time.

Student slits teacher's throat

Confiscated mobile phone said to be behind attack

KILLED : Mr Sun Wakang, who was attacked by a student in his classroom, died at the scene.

A TEACHER in China paid the ultimate price for trying to discipline a student.

The teacher had his throat slit by a grade 12 student with a fruit knife on Sept 14 after he confiscated a mobile phone.

Britain's Daily Mail reported that the student, named only as Lei in local news reports, had been found playing with his phone by his teacher, Mr Sun Wakang, 32, during a chemistry lesson at a middle school in Fuzhou, in China's eastern Jiangxi province.

The following day Lei went to Mr Sun's classroom where the teacher was marking papers, and slit his throat.

The father of a one-year-old daughter died at the scene as the student fled.

The report said the student called the local emergency number on Sept 17 and confessed to the crime before turning himself in to police in Shanghai.

Mr Sun had worked as a chemistry teacher at Linchuan No. 2 Middle School for five years before his brutal murder, school official Xiong Haishui said.

He was a well-loved teacher, and had even coached a student who won the National High School Olympics Chemistry competition.

The report said that through the teacher had taken the student's mobile phone, it had been returned at the end of the day.

Lei attacked Mr Sun just four days after China's Teacher's Day which was celebrated on Sept 10.

Officials say a fellow teacher heard Mr Sun's scream and called emergency services, but the 32-year-old was dead before an ambulance arrived.

Linchuan No.2 Middle School is one of the best schools in Jiangxi Province and has one of the highest university acceptance ratios in the region.

oh, bullshit!

Those fucking schools are hellholes.  If you can't speak english by the time your in first grade you don't belong in public school.  I am so sick of schools giving special treatment to "disadvantaged" students at the expense of the rest of the classroom.  Not everybody is entitled to the same education.

THE BIG IDEA: Stop being the sage on the stage

FROM 15 years of crafting education policies for the British government, including being chancellor of two universities, Lord David Puttnam says that teachers have to change the way they prepare students for life as follows:

• Start the new school year by analysing the strengths and weaknesses of every child in your class. Leave aside for a moment concerns about whether they can read or count as well as you would like them to do.

Instead, once you have determined what they are best and worst at, encourage them to be great at what they are clearly good. And worry less about making them competent in subjects in which they are clearly not interested.

Lord Puttnam understands that this is easier said than done because existing education systems are structured in complex ways. But he says the strength-weakness analysis is still valuable for identifying a child's innate abilities that will help him or her remain employable for life.

• Accept that you do not know a lot about everything, so change the way you teach from "I tell you what to do, so do it" to "I can help you do what you want to do and I will support you such that you learn meaningfully".

At the same time, invite external experts on subjects that your students want to learn more about, to talk to your class occasionally. This will give students a better idea of how their interests play out in the real world.

• Actively encourage your charges to be fearless. Ask them regularly: "What would you do if you had nothing to fear?"
