Precisely. Politicos tend to be good at rallying the weak-minded by whipping up occasional mass hysteria, FOR THE CHILDREN.
Not to mention, the resourceful ones usually outsource the hysteria-whippers, for plausible deniability – «We're not making any hysteria, we're taking people's concern seriously!»
And if some weird shit sticks on the unfortunate thought-criminal in question (like Assange), then that's just so much the better; people will never listen to him again.
Better still, it can be used on future troublemakers; «The last ones were discovered to be sex offenders, the lot. Seems to be a connection there. How'bout you, kid?»
