Don't want to split hairs but capitalism is by definition any system in which private ownership of the "means of production" is widespread, it doesn't go into specifics which we need to do here to understand what the "system" is and what's "broke".

Capitalism in the form of individuals being allowed to act autonomously without constant bureaucratic oversight is not the problem. The reason the economy is failing is not because the professional engineers and managers who run medium sized businesses involved in complex scientific fields are allowed equity.

Crony capitalism is the problem, as you described.

In the old days nobody would dream about the government bailing a failing business, as in the case of BoA, Citi, GM etc

There have been bailouts in the past, the difference is that these were businesses left in the dust by technological advances or major economic events, what we are looking at now are major financial institutions being bailed out.
