When Edison was researching suitable-looking materials for filaments in incandescent light bulbs, he was supposedly once asked if it wasn't a failure that he hadn't found one that worked yet. To which he replied "We've identified 500 materials that we know don't work. You call that failure?"
You come up with a new idea to be tested. If it works, great. Now find out how and why, so we can build on that knowledge. Even if it doesn't, find out how and why. There'll still be stuff to learn. That's how science works.
Even the famous quest for cures for cancer &stuff, get to be useful, whether we ever actually find the cure or not. We find out new stuff on the way. Much of it we would never have found without this quest.
