Sidewalk Sitting Ban???

Name: Anonymous 2012-08-07 19:23

Ok:
Let's have some actual discussion here.
Some American cities are trying to ban sitting on the sidewalk. Not BLOCKING the sidewalk, sitting to the side of the walkway. Or in plazas.
Now. I like to do this, as do some of my friends. Many little kids I know like to sit on the sidewalk. It feels like a basic right, in a public place.
The argument for the ban is that bums tend to congregate in the downtown, and create an unfriendly environment.
I think that addressing the behavior with laws that are already in place is probably the way to go: banning sidewalk sitting seems silly and fascistic to me.
(Of course /newpol/ Nazis may take offense at this, lol)

Yet another example of idiots attacking the symptom of a problem instead of the CAUSE. If bums are a problem, why not spend your timing finding out why and then fixing it? This will work a lot better than making it illegal to sit down. I mean, what are you going to do whem bums decide to stand up instead? Or get a chair? Will it be illegal to use a chair in a public place? What would be the penalty? Would you throw someone in jail for sitting down? I imagine having a criminal record for ass to side walk violation.

It was the hippies who glamorized acting lazy and impulsive and branded the polite and orderly as anal retentive squares, now they are crying because people are littering, mottling the sidewalk with spent chewing gum and the state has to step in to stop people from obstructing crowded streets.

Obviously the solution to this problem is through society, not passnig more laws and throwing taxpayer money at the problem. We need to get back to the 1950s, and no, that doesn't mean racism and sexism.
