Because they never did matter. National identity was only ever a means for people to feel that they belong to something they probably don't know anything about while having an exclude and hate others who weren't in your special, national tree club house. Most people are horribly insecure and crave something to belong to that tells them who they are and nationalism is the oldest bad solution to people's fears and ignorance. Because everyone who isn't an idiot (note the clause) knows that there is zero fundamental difference between someone whose family has lived in one country for 20 generations compared to someone who lived there for 2 generations.
