Where do our rights come from?

Name: Anonymous 2012-02-23 0:06

When I think of modern politicians, such as everyone in the 2012 American presidential election, their policies have no basis in any concrete God-given or Society-given rights. The Declaration of Independence says that "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights". Feel free to substitute any particular God/Creator, since Jefferson's idea of God wasn't the Christian one, and Jefferson was the one who penned the phrase.

They instead argue that Health Care is a right on practical grounds, or that ObamaCare is about violating freedom. But I haven't heard of a concrete philosophical basis they use to justify beliefs in those rights. I question the wisdom of a political system that doesn't have (or politicians won't express) an actual philosophical basis for rights because it endangers things like free speech.

Strategy and political doublespeak. Most politicians are more concerned with selling themselves than actually changing people's minds. Talking about fundamental philosophical reasons for having a particular stance would only further alienate people that disagreed with it. It probably wouldn't actually win anyone over. People's minds are usually made up on individual issues before elections.

Politicians will always pussyfoot around difficult subjects and give canned responses that offend the fewest possible number of voters. If you want to hear real discussion, you have to look elsewhere.
