Putin is highly educated and intelligent, I'm sure he is completely aware of the slippery slope fallacy and victory disease and will take precautions to ensure he does not over-extend himself, he might not make that kind of mistake but he is still just a human and may find himself in a situation caused by events he could not possibly predict or prevent. We'll see whether he decides to slink back into the oligarchy, or risk trying to maintain power and either succeed proving his opponents were bluffing or fail, fail due to having been pressured into taking that position or fail due to vanity.
