While he might have lost some of the wingnut vote, he'd have been able to tap Obama's base, and he'd have been the only credible candidate in the race able to do that.  Most of the credible candidates in the field are just too far on the right to be able to win - Bachmann and Perry just wouldn't attract the average guy.  If given a fair hearing, Ron Paul could do it, but he doesn't stand a chance of winning the Republican nomination and doesn't stand a chance of winning the election as a third-party candidate.

And therein lies the problem, the nuts pack the primaries while moderates/obama's base either don't show up or cannot participate in the primary.

Right.  The whole "pledged delegate" thing reduces the spoiler effect because most spoilers end up dropping out of the race before the convention.

That said, she's not dead yet.  It's not unknown for a candidate not in the race to end up with the convention nomination.

However, you do need to understand something. Most conservatives dislike even their own candidates. Most politicians are scum regardless of the party they are in. We expect to be let down because we understand politics attracts the worst sort of people. As such, we don't mind getting rid of the rotten apples.

Democrats, however, will back a rotten turd forever, no matter how corrupt that person is or what scandal happens. In fact, sometimes I think that is what libfags like about their candidates, but I wouldn't dare try to understand the liberal mindset.
