Democratic Socialism

I've recently begun reading quite a lot about different political and economic views, and have begun to realize that I identify most with Democratic Socialism.  I have one question about it, though.  Because democracy is applied to business, what keeps the larger majority of workers demanding more money than managers and up receive?  Would there be federal laws making minimum incomes for each level of the business hierarchy, or would workers just realize that that model would run the business into the ground?

I've been doing a lot of reading and I think I've come to have a good grasp on the economic system of a Democratic Socialism.

1. Industries that should not be run on a for profit basis (Healthcare) and Industries with huge amounts of capital involved (Possibly Steel or Energy) would be government run.

2.  The remaining industries (ie consumer goods) would not be run by the government.  Each individual "firm" would be run by a worker cooperative.  This essentially means that instead of top business execs and share holders making all of the decisions, all of the stake holders (anyone employed by the company) would make decisions democratically.  For larger companies, this may mean through a democratically elected board of officials, while for smaller companies, this may mean a simple majority vote.  Either way: 1 man, 1 vote.
