King James I of England declared upon his coronation in 1603 that he would be the absolute monarch of England and would no longer answer to the pope. While Protestantism was succeeding in England, Roman Catholics in the country were being oppressed. A band of Catholic conspirators, led by Robert Catesby, hired a soldier and munitions expert named Guy Fawkes to blow up the Parliament building during a meeting of James I and his ministers.
The plan was uncovered when one of the conspirators warned a friend to stay away. Thirty barrels of gunpowder were found in a cellar underneath Parliament. Fawkes was not the originator of the plan, but his capture led to the arrest of his accomplices, and all were executed. His name has been associated with the Gunpowder Plot, and his capture is still celebrated annually in England on Guy Fawkes Day (November 5), when children set off fireworks and burn effigies, or stuffed figures, known as "guys."
