NK needs to realize that Pyongyang will be a pile of rubble not even 15 minutes after they hit Seoul with artillery fire. They DO realize how many ships we have stationed in the yellow sea, right? And I guarantee that many of those warships are equipped with tomahawks.
They are utterly incompetent to be able to believe that they can survive a war with the U.S. and SK.

Possibly, but they certainly have figured out that whenever the US has a Democrat in the White House, he'll offer them foreign aid every time they do shit like this.
I predict it here. You'll see. There will be some kind of upcoming regional talks soon and Obongo will end up paying billions of dollars in aid to his fellow revolutionary Maoists in NK.

Which is bullshit, the idea that the U.S. government shuffled our feet around long enough to actually ALLOW North Korea to develop nuclear weaponry is infuriating to say the least.
I mean, fuck, we already know of the human rights violations, to put it delicately, going on in those prison camps that the North Korean government has set up for dissidents. If this had been some African or Arab nation, or an eastern European nation for that matter, the U.N. would have set up and sent a military coalition in a heartbeat. But for some goddamn reason we haven't sent any over to goddamn North Korea!
...I honestly think that the reason that nothing has happened sooner is because none of the western nations want Korea to re-unify. I'll bet that if it comes to that, then China will offer aid and military support to the re-unified Korea "until it stabilizes." And who do you think Korea is going to want aid from? The filthy Americans or fellow Asians?
Any U.S. forces that we have currently in SK will be asked to leave and the U.S., as well as the rest of the western world, will lose a valuable foothold in that region.
I could just be thinking to much though...

South Korea itself isn't very eager about reunification. What would it do to their economy? The same thing that reunification did to West Germany in 1991, probably--wreck their economy completely for a decade or longer.
Note that for twenty and more years no, South Korean politicians, be they of the "left" or the "right" (scare quotes because those labels don't mean quite the same things in the ROK that they do anywhere else), have always fought very hard to prop up the NK government. They are always the first, and China usually second, to undermine any effort by the US or Japan to put any pressure on the NK government on its human rights record, its nuclear weapons program, etc., and the first to give in to blackmail and give aid to prop up NK--even more than China.
The tl;dr version is that Korea north of the DMZ looks like the Land of Mordor and the SK's like their growing First World economy very much, thank you, and don't want to have to take in and feed millions of starving northerners, nor clean up the land poisoned and contaminated by the NK government's chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons programs. It might be different if they thought they could get help. The Reagan and Bush administrations, not to mention the rest of NATO, made a lot of noises after the Berlin Wall came down about how eager they were to help a unified Germany rebuild the East. It was all talk. And the South Koreans noticed.

Lee says reunification of two Koreas drawing near
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec. 9 (Yonhap) -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak expressed hope Thursday for an early reunification of the two Koreas, saying ordinary people in North Korea should enjoy the benefits of economic prosperity just as southerners.
Lee pointed out that the communist North's recent artillery attack on a South Korean island has promoted unity among South Koreans and that many nations have joined in blaming Pyongyang.

That's going to drag the South down if that ever happens (probably won't happen anyway, it's all talk as all politicians)
