"African American" is silly, sillier than nigger is actually. Black is the colloquial and does fine, it doesn't assume that they are citizens of particular country, is a single syllable, and doesn't set up a barrier of condescension between the racial majority and racial minorities (that is to say, when do white people ever get called "European Americans"?)
