Why do White ppl care about Dalai Lama?

Why do white people care about the Dalai Lama so much?  Even more so than Asian ppl?  You see, San Francisco has about 50% Asians.. yet the vast majority of ppl protesting in favor of the Dalai Lama (at least in the photos) from that city are white.

I don't get it...

I am a holocaust denier and I believe their arrest was justified, I go around saying shit like "most jews died of starvation and collateral damage during the red army's push through eastern europe, they were treated like sub-humans, it is an evil episode in human history but there was no systematic extermination of jews" and I don't get arrested.
