Many Jewish kids I heard from were permitted to watch the Grinch every year, yet somehow nobody (including my parents) is able to explain why this is so. Nearly everyone who wrote to me explained that the Boris Karloff version of the Grinch was "a classic."

What surfaces is a universal (and discomfiting) sense that the Grinch is a fundamentally Jewish show because the Grinch himself is a fundamentally Jewish character. I got one e-mail that concluded, "Who is more of a Grinch than a grumpy old Jew?" And a Jew with a heart problem no less?

But why do Jewish parents want to be pushing this peculiarly self-loathing vision of the bitter old Jewish man on their kids? Do we drag our kids to see The Merchant of Venice? If anything, the Grinch-as-old-Jew notion... is the ultimate fantasy for a Jewish kid with a case of Santa/tree/carols envy―Christmas, canceled."

"Permitted"?, have your parents ever stopped you from watching a TV show because it portrayed any ethnic group you belong in a bad light?

The Grinch also never mentions Christ, or God or anything like that, it refers to it as a happy holiday, that's about it.

This has got to be the worst attempt ever at stringing a conspiracy together.

I heard it on NPR.  It's something many Jews believe.

You are all narrow minded. It is Jews that commercialised Christmas, but you all enjoy the gorgeous Christmas ornaments, the Red and White Santa, Christmas bargains, and the lovely Christmas presents. These are all created by Jews for both the Jews and Goys enjoy. So what's wrong with Jews???

Yhwh, God in English, is who and a kind of system that human being created and made contract with for themselves in the present day middle east thousands of years ago. It is silly that people are still bound by the contract that the ancient people, who were primitive in the notion of human rights, exchanged with who they created.
We do not have to instantly abandon the contract with God=Yhwh, but should keep compromising. We should not conflict. The late Pope Jon Paul II was one of the greatest persons in this regard. He was very strict in his own belief but he also knew that dialogue, tolerance and tolerance were more important than anything.

The reason why you Americans and Europeans tend to believe in God is that you always tend to be in haste to get clear words that explains everything instantly and that Christianity and Judaism have been using the tactics to get hold of the heart of every simpleton. Buddhism is completely different. Buddhism teaches you how to think or, if any, gives you helpful hints to think for yourself. This is why Buddhism is incomparatively superior to Christianity and Judaism. Enlighten yourselves with Buddhism.

Belief in the supernatural, that's Christianity and Judaism. Bddhism doesn't teach the existence of the supernatural including God and Yhwh at all. What you think are the supernatural in Buddhism is just part of the rhetoric to be used to lead "beginners" to the road for the real enlightenment. It doesn't matter at all whether the supernatural, including God and Yhwh, do exist or not. The core of the Buddhist idea is nothing to do with the question. You see a number of supernatural existences, which may look weird to you in the first place, in Buddhism because it first spread in ancient India, where most people believed in what appear in Brahmanism. Buddhism would more often than not have mentioned God, Yhwh, Jesus, Angels and the like, or gods and spirits that appear in European paganisms, if Buddism had reached into Europe before the modern era. Those who are well educated are taught the body of Buddhist theory in a different way, often without mentioning the supernatural at all. For example, see zen Buddhist denominations.

You misunderstand not only Buddhism but also China. First, indeed Buddhism doesn't force you to work hard, it doesn't mean Buddhism is the religion of laziness, and you only superficially look at Buddhism to draw completely incorrect consequence with intention of the wrong and hollow belief - Christianity. Second, China's Buddhist culture became almost extinct long long ago, and what dominates the Han Chinese mind is Taoism, not Buddhism. Unlike Buddhism, Taoism is as simple and material as Christianity is.

The lethal problem of the Protestantism is that people completely rely on their personal understandings that things are all either good or evil. There is no dialectic in it. This way of thinking is so primitive that it often is harmful to human beings. Christianity itself is not necessarily wrong where as the way Americans toy with Christianity is dangerous.

Enlightenment itself is not difficult at all. To be determined to practise Buddhism is nothing but enlightenment. You find my argument is contradictory - yes contradictory indeed and superficially. When you're talking with me, you need to sublate what I say. Buddhism often use contradictory such as "it exists and it doesn't exist", where you must find the ultimate truth is. Looking back at the Christianity sects, they all stop at the primitive level of antinomy. This is rather dangerous.

Buddhism is so difficult that people need to get educated throughout their lives. They can't be lazy to practise Buddhism. If there is a lazy Buddhist person, he is walking in a wrong road.

Christians indulge themselves into antinomy and do never go forward. This is what laziness is, you have to understand.

If it's so open minded and philosophical, then why start with a set list of ethics such as the Eightfold Path?  Listing a bunch of things you don't like about human nature doesn't make them true, it only imposes a subjective view of ethics as moral absolutism,  leading to fear and shame of human nature as followers try not to 'sin' under those rules, like another version of the ten commandments (don't lie, don't kill).  Saying a system of ethics is "true" doesn't make it true, it just makes it a system of ethics.

You are still misunderstanding. The Eightfold Path is not precepts. It is merely what you are recommended to keep in mind if you wish for enlightment. It is not forced to you at all. If there WERE any other ethics with which you could enlighten yourself, then you might feel free to follow. The Path is said to have been advocated by Gautama Buddha, who said that if you wish to awaken your spirit then you take it easy just keeping the Eightfold Path and proceeding slowly but being determined. It is not necessary to endure austerities. As for the latter, history tells you that it is not Christianity but those who have toyed Christianity, who have been actually people of the European origin, killed so many people in the name of Jesus and God. Also ethics is not the truth but just measures to reach the truth, you should understand.

You have questions, which begginers always have, and will have more, because you have just departed for the truth. It is important to "find" questions and think for yourself patiently and not to make haste to get as easy an anwer as leaders in Christianity and Judaism gives you. Be feel free to be ensured that, a Christian or Judaist, you needn't apostatise your religion to become a Buddhist. Following Buddhism is not a betrayal to your old faith at all. So, be relaxed.

Vimarlakirti, in the sutra, even makes fool of bonzes and criticises them for being intellectually lazy.
