Yes, the US armed the Afghan resistance.  The Soviet Empire was the bigger threat at the time.  Al-Qaeda, however, didn't even exist until the early 1990s, as it was a creation of the Saudi and Pakistani military intelligence organizations, long after the First Afghan War was over.  But you knew this, as anyone who's spent five minutes reading about the subject does, so I've caught you in out-and-out lies.
