The impoverished North African state of Mauritania suffered a coup d'etat today when soldiers marched up to the palace and arrested the President.
Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi was taken away by members of his own presidential security battalion, according to his daughter.
"The president has just been arrested by a commando, who came to fetch him, arrested him here and took him away," said Amal Mint Cheikh Abdallahi, in an interview on French radio.
The Prime Minister and the Interior Minister are also reported to have been arrested, and state radio and television have been taken off air, their staff ordered by troops to go home. So far there have been no reports of violence.
