It's because Europe is more than just a geographical term. 'Europe' has long been used as a shorthand in Britain to mean the dominant power on the mainland, either France, Spain or Germany, and later to mean the EU (which Britain wasn't a member of when it was first formed). As a result, although Brits know Britain is geographically in Europe, they have a lingering sense that 'Europe' means mainland Europe in the political/ military sense, rather than geographical Europe (whatever that even means- is Russia in Europe?).
It's not about thinking, it's about not wanting to be part of that EU thing that's trying to destroy us and make farmers gold pants. Bad enough that we're in the UN

besides the media bias against it all, there is a long history of both political parties opposing full european integration. tories opposed it for nationalist reasons, labour for economic reasons (unions opposed it). nowadays it barely matters. its vital we have an authority above the state level for environmental policy, but beyond that, within EU or not, the course for britain is the same, unless people start voting in their economic interests rather than someone elses, which is really unlikely
