Why does the US support Israel

The old argument that their our only ally in the mid-east doesn't make sense.  I was thinking about this when my buddy came back from his deployment to Qatar.  The US doesn't have any military bases in Israel.  In fact, I can't really think of ANYTHING the US gets out of Israel.
