90s liberalism vs 2000s liberalism

I think political correctness and liberals are much more moderate now than during the 90s. Affirmative action and white male bashing for no particular reason arose during the 90s but has since cooled off, many countries like Britain now have a no positive-discrimination policy and prefer to increase civil rights enforcement rather than the extreme thoughtless measures some liberals espouse.

Why did liberals suddenly become whining extremists during the 90s?
